Multi-layered Work of Artist duo Kristin-Lee Moolman and IB Kamara
The work of artist duo Kristin-Lee Moolman and IB Kamara (from South Africa and Sierra Leone respectively) is multi-layered to say the least. Their images challenge the aged normative views applied to race, sexuality and gender, empowering their subject, non-depending of the setting. In the Magaluf! series initiated and published by Eytys, Moolman and Kamara portray a group of London club kids visiting the infamous Mallorcan holiday resort known for its boozy youth tourism. Playing with the theme of misplacement and norm confrontation, the choice of location was inspired by a notorious Swedish 90s phenomenon referred to as ’tough-guy trips’, a social experiment in which the Swedish government sent young criminals to sunny holiday resorts in an attempt to rehabilitate them from criminal behavior. An unsuccessful project widely criticised by the public for its naivety. The backdrop puts the duo’s signature norm-breaking aesthetic in a contrasting banal environment, encouraging both smiles and reflection. Magaluf! is printed in Gothenburg, Sweden. First edition of 800 copies as well as a limited edition of 25 copies in handmade slipcase with archival pigment print, signed and numbered by the artist.
